Garden Pea Variety: Pusa Prabal

Background:
Garden pea is a cash vegetable crop grown for fresh pods. The crop is susceptible to wilt (early sown) and powdery mildew disease (mid-season or late sown) which causes yield reduction up to 30-70%. This adds to the cost of production for disease management through pesticides. Powdery mildew affected pods also become unmarketable and thus, leads to a great economic loss to garden pea growers. Technology Details:
The variety “Pusa Prabal” has been developed at Division of Vegetable Science by hybridizing suitable donors for problematic both diseases (wilt & powdery mildew). It has dual resistance for Fusarium wilt and powdery mildew disease and crop can be saved by growing this variety “Pusa Prabal” among the farmers in northern plains. It is a medium maturing variety having double podded, dark green long pods with 7 -9seeds/pod, more shelling (52%) and average yield of 13.79 t/ha which was 42.98% higher yield than the national check VRP 7(10.92t/ha).
